National Chocolate Chip Day – Here’s to you Ruth Wakefield!

Toll House Story

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day, and it’s deemed such a significant day, it merits another day of commemoration on May 15th! It seems only fitting that we honor Ruth Wakefield on both these dates. Above is a picture of her featured in a 1940 printing of her cookbook “Toll House Tried & True Recipes.” Actually this picture was taken in one of our baking kitchens named in her honor. She is with us here in the kitchens every day as you can see.

Original NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe

We all owe Ruth a big thank you and a toast to her creativity in the kitchen with a glass of cold milk or even champagne (today is also National Champagne Day by the way!). If Ruth had not been experimenting in her kitchen one day in the 1930s, did not chop up a bar of Nestlé Semi-Sweet Chocolate and put the bits of chocolate in a batch of Butter Drop cookie dough, we would not have chocolate chips or the most popular cookie recipe of all time, the Original Nestlé Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie to celebrate this day with! Read more about the story here.

Through the years, chocolate chips have made their way into thousands of recipes and in turn, these recipes have been woven into many memories and celebrations. Besides the cookie recipe above, here are some additional recipes for you to celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day with.

No-Bake Sweet & Salty Peanut Butter Pretzel Bars recipe

1. No Bake Sweet & Salty Peanut Butter Pretzel Bars

No time to bake? This sweet and salty recipe features semi-sweet chocolate morsels, pretzel pieces and peanut butter, shown above. What’s not to love about this recipe? These will not last long!

Trail Mix NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Cookies recipe

2.  Trail Mix Nestlé Toll House Cookies
With this recipe, semi-sweet chocolate morsels, granola cereal and dried fruit and berries are added to the dough shown above. I love the texture that the cereal brings to the cookie. Our new Dark Chocolate Morsels are particularly tasty in this recipe!

Dark Chocolate Crumb Bars recipe

3. Dark Chocolate Crumb Bars
Looking for a more indulgent recipe to make? This layered bar uses our new Dark Chocolate Morsels in the chocolate layer and sprinkled on top with walnuts, shown above. Pecans would be good here as well.

Island Cookies recipe

4. Island Cookies

Toasted coconut, walnuts and milk chocolate morsels are in this scrumptious cookie. Some of our bakers love to change up this recipe by using toasted macadamia nuts and also our Premier White Morsels.

How will I celebrate this day? By baking up a few batches of cookies for my daughter’s band camp dinner, thinking of the smiles these cookies will bring to their faces after a long day of practice and toasting Ruth with my glass of cold milk while I munch on a cookie myself – of course!
